Chapter 5

Moral Virtues and Social Standards

I doubt you will ever meet a more ethically inclined person than me. By that I mean that I usually have a tendency to do the right thing. I hold myself to the highest standards, plus, I live by a certain set of values that is only typical of a moral person. I am honest, trustworthy and loyal. I generally go out of my way to assist people in need. Most often than not, I seem to get along with everyone I meet. No matter the sex, age, gender, creed, sexual orientation, religion, background, etc. My open-mindedness gives me the ability, and willingness to accept people exactly how they are. This is one of my best traits. Sometimes I make the mistake of putting other people’s feelings and emotions before my own. This is something that has caused me a great deal of distress. As you might expect, it opens the door for people to take advantage of you. But even then, this has not detoured my character one bit, nor has it changed my outlook on life.

I always try my best to make positive contributions towards society, whether it be a small, simple gesture in public, like stop on side of the road for a pedestrian in need, or some other random act of kindness such as complimenting a co-worker on a job well done. One thing I’m not is selfish. Every chance I get, I donate money to a good cause. If I come across a beggar on the street, and have a buck or two in pocket, very seldom will I turn him or her down. After all, helping others is only the right thing to do. I don’t try to step over other people to make advancements in life. Not at work, at school or anywhere else. I look down on that sort of thing. People often seek me for advice. If you ask the people who know me best, they will probably tell you that I’m a real good listener, and a better friend. On certain occasions I’ve even been accused of being too nice, and naive, and have been repeatedly told by some that, “good guys don’t finish last”. Ironically enough, these concerns typically tend to come from some of my Christian friends. I don’t steal. I don’t hold grudges. And I’m certainly not a hypocrite.

Please don’t misunderstand what I’m trying to say. I am not claiming to be the perfect human being, even if it might come off that way. By no means am I that. I do have somewhat of a past, like anyone else, I suspect. You simply don’t grow up in a city like this one and not have an occasional run in. But don’t expect it to be anything out of the ordinary because it’s not. The only thing I’m really guilty of is having a bit too much fun at times.
